BBC from Northern Ireland BBC from Northern Ireland BBC

A Russian super airplane bringing medical drugs and devices to India hit by the third Corona wave. The BBC reports from Northern Ireland:

More aid is coming from Germany and other Western countries. The daily infections rate mounted to about 400.000. Oxygen for treatment and human resources are lacking. One of the hotspots is the state of Maharashtra with the megacity of Mumbai (Bombay) in the West. How is the famous charity ADAPT (formerly Spastic Society of India) providing physical and psychological treatment for handicapped children (mostly from its shanty-town Dharavi)? I am in contact with its staff:

"Hope you and the other people of ADAPT are safe. Please let me know how you are protecting the handicapped children in Dharavi. How is vaccination going on in Mumbai?

Best wishes from Ekkehard"

Answer from Varsha, deputy of Dr Mithu Alur, the charity's founder, on 07/05/2021:

Hi. We are all safe, thank you. Dr. Alur had started tele therapy and online teaching immediately so we are in touch with the children and young adults. Some have returned to their villages of course.... They've started vaccinating you above 18 now... Most of us have taken the first dose of the vaccine. Waiting for enough vaccines to be available for the second shot. Hope you and Helen are well... And have taken both the shots. Regards".

There is hardly a single area of private or commercial life that the Treasury is not milking for all
    its worth.

Thanks largely to the freezing of thresholds and allowance, higher wages and many in work, tax receipts have hit record levels.

New figures show the Government raked in a staggering £77.6billion in income and inheritance
tax and other levies last month.

So what will Chancellor Jeremy Hunt do with this massive bonanza?
He could squirrel it away like Scrooge. He could chuck it into the
    insatiable maw of the NHS.

However, if - as he claims - he has a sincere desire to drive up economic dynamism, he will redistribute
this bonanza in the form of tax cuts in the spring.

Not only would tax reductions leave people more of their own money to spend, it would boost
    business and stimulate growth.

What will Chancellor Jeremy Hunt do with this massive bonanza?
He could squirrel it away like Scrooge. He could chuck it
into the insatiable maw of the NHS

The Mail understands Mr Hunt wants to repair our creaking
    public finances.

The reality, though, is if he does not announce tax cuts at the first opportunity, the lights will
go out on the Conservatives' already slender electoral prospects for good.

On top of that, the Chancellor should further exploit the
benefits of Brexit by taking a machete to bureaucracy and public spending, in particular welfare.

Deliver these, and Britain can move back towards the small-state model that was once an unshakeable tenet of Toryism.
From there, tax cuts and sound finances naturally follow.

    Dying for compassion

The question of assisted dying and a terminally ill person's right to
end their life is one of the most challenging moral and
    legal issues of our age.

This highly charged debate has been reignited this week by Esther Rantzen, who revealed she has joined Dignitas,
the Swiss clinic that helps people kill themselves.

The 83-year-old broadcaster, gravely ill with lung cancer, is campaigning for Parliament to
hold a free vote on letting doctors give patients the means to take their
    own lives.

Opinion polls suggest the public back the legalisation of assisted dying in increasing numbers.
Advocates say any law would contain rigorous safeguards to protect
    the vulnerable.

    people kill themselves

But history shows us that in countries where the 'right to die' is permitted, these have slipped to
the point where so-called mercy killing has effectively become normalised.

It is also naive to deny that assisted dying laws could be exploited by unscrupulous relatives
seeking to protect their inheritance, or a health service buckling under the cost of
palliative care to an ageing population.

Yet who could have anything but the deepest sympathy for those who
are already close to death and want a doctor to take away their intolerable suffering?

This paper has never pretended there are easy answers to this
    complex, sensitive matter.

But while this is a path we tread at our peril, Britain is a mature
and sophisticated democracy. Let assisted dying be debated.

    Keir's asylum betrayal

After fiercely opposing Tory efforts to resolve the illegal immigration crisis, why has Sir Keir Starmer
been so reluctant to set out his grand vision?

Yesterday, we finally got an answer to that pressing question,
courtesy of a French MEP. A Labour government, she said, would cut a deal for EU countries to
take back some of those entering the UK on small boats.

After fiercely opposing Tory efforts to resolve the illegal immigration crisis, why has Sir Keir Starmer been so
reluctant to set out his grand vision?

But in return, we would accept a hefty proportion of asylum seekers
already in safe countries on the continent - with some estimates of
100,000 - and the ensuing cost.

This confused arrangement would see Britain end up with
more irregular migrants, rather than fewer.
By accepting quotas, Sir Keir would be handing Brussels even greater powers over our immigration policy than when we
were still in the EU's orbit.

That would be less a mutually beneficial deal - and more an abject surrender of the hard-fought sovereignty we
    won through Brexit.
